Title: New UK NGO site, CSS + baked
Post by: deeve007 on June 06, 2006, 10:48:18 PM
Hey guys,

Just launched the new site for the NGO I'm currently volunteering with in Kenya: www.actionchildren.org

All baked, apart from "news" (cutenews) and the galleries. The news modules available didn't seem to allow me the same flexibility with categories as Cutenews does, and I could not for the life of me get any of the available photo gallery modules to work, so used a script I found and photos can be added via the WB admin in the media folder.

Still need to tidy up the CSS, was lazy and used some default WB tables for forms and such, will need to fix that when I have a moment...

Thanks to all those who offered help during my various tribulations, much appreciated.

Dave

One of the most professional sites ever seen with WB  :-D ...

It's just sad having it so extensely protected and so
preventing us all to learn from your ability... :|

Well thought out and good use of CSS, snippets, and modules...

Just one suggestiong... the java navigation could be made into completely css... as to not break some browsers.

kickarse, it really isn't Java navigation. It's CSS. It will work withouth the javascript in a modern browser. The javascript is just a backup and is only here because pure CSS dropdown menus don't work in IE.

Virgil, there's nothing protected here. Just a brilliant use of image replacement techniques in the menus. This took a lot of work.

I'm impressed by your CSS skills. I find the orange and blue attention grabbing but not comfortable for a long stay. Also, it really makes the photo of Kilimanjaro look creepy.

Thanks for the compliments guys. Sorry, hadn't returned to the forum for a while after posting this (went off to Germany for the World Cup!), so didn't see until now.

Am pretty happy overall with the site myself, though there's a few CSS hacks to get things working in the limited time I had. Not valid XHTML/CSS as I would have liked if I had more time, but being done "on the side" meant time was of a premium. And being my first "baked" site had much to learn, which hopefully is shown in the second "baked" site, www.michezoyouth.com.

And yes, no hidden stuff here, just quite straightforward background images used for list menus. All menus generating as unordered lists so as to degrade well if stylesheets are turned off. Not a CSS "expert" by any means, just always like to find out how something is done either online or by work colleagues. I guess 10 years in the web "game" had to get me some level of knowledge afterall, even if it was mostly as a lowly Producer!  ;)

Any code is accessible just as it would be any other site - view source, and see link for style sheet for CSS. How do you access code & learn from any other site??

But like I said, take my CSS with a grain of salt, not the prettiest I could have done (had been a while since building a site myself).

Can you suppy your site as a template or skin that we can then use to alter the background images and style sheets?  This is the first Baker site I have seen to accomplish the navigation drop down menu.  I really would like this ability in my site design but have not yet learned how to successfully add it.  Is it done in the skin or applied as a module?  Can you help in any way to help with this?

CSS... just learn CSS. And as I said, if you take a look at the code plus stylesheets it pretty much tells you everything that's going on. The includes in the template are as per standard template thereabouts, just with styles added.

alistapart.com is a good place for anyone to start learning CSS... csszengarden.com another one.

Would be impossible to supply as a template or skin, way too many replacement images used, it would take someone just as long to go through and replace as to create the site from scratch, and the design itself I could not release as a generic "template".

Basically, there's no WB specific "tricks" used, just readily available (and quite commonly used) CSS.

Seems to be working fine on this end, Firefox and IE on WinXP. Could you let me know what browser & platform you're having issues with, and what exactly the issues are?

Thanks.
