Is there an alternative template upload method?

On my server using the WB backend to upload templates causes the files in them to get locked. The server PHP runs as a separate user so the files are also created with that user not mine. Just trying to manually upload into the templates folder doesn't work at all.  Is there an alternative template upload method?
